How to measure the square footage of a room

Square footage is the floor area of a room. You need it for flooring, rugs, heating and cooling, and listing a home.

Square feet = length × widthMeasure in feet. For odd shapes, split the room into rectangles and add them.

Rectangular rooms

Measure wall to wall along the floor in both directions. A room 15 feet by 11 feet is 15 × 11 = 165 sq ft.

Converting inches

If a wall is 11 feet 6 inches, divide the inches by 12: 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5, so it's 11.5 feet. A 15 ft × 11 ft 6 in room is 15 × 11.5 = 172.5 sq ft.

L-shaped rooms

Draw the room on paper and split it into two rectangles. Measure each one and add them together.

Side section8 × 10 = 80 sq ft
Total320 sq ft

In Squarely, add each rectangle as its own room and the app adds them for you.

Closets and nooks

If the flooring goes into the closet, measure it as a separate rectangle and include it. If it doesn't, leave it out.

Square meters

Measure in meters and multiply the same way. To convert, 1 square meter is about 10.76 sq ft. Squarely has a Meters switch if you'd rather work in metric.
